Former Ghana midfielder Ahmed Barusso has reflected candidly on his international career, admitting he never played a full 90 minutes for the Black Stars but insists he holds no regrets over his limited role in one of Ghana’s most competitive eras.
The former AS Roma midfielder, who earned 10 caps between 2007 and 2009, was part of a talented Ghana squad featuring midfield stars such as Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari, and Stephen Appiah.
“I can’t say much because I didn’t play a 90-minute game. All the games I played, I had to come on as a sub. It wasn’t bad,” Barusso said.
He highlighted key moments from his international career, including appearances at the Africa Cup of Nations and his memorable debut goal against Morocco.
“The Nations Cup game against Cameroon, I came in. It wasn’t bad. And some of the friendly games we played. In France against Morocco, when I scored, they were all games that were important,” he added.
Barusso made a dream start to his Black Stars career in August 2007, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 friendly victory over Morocco in France — a moment that remains one of the highlights of his international journey.
Despite never establishing himself as a regular starter, the former midfielder maintained a calm and philosophical outlook on his time with the national team.
“But well, it’s a national team, and we are many. Not all of us will get the opportunity to play,” he noted.
His reflections underline the depth and competition within Ghana’s squad during a golden generation era, when breaking into the midfield was an extremely difficult task.
Barusso also accepted his role within the group, emphasizing that he valued every opportunity he received.
“It wasn’t bad,” he concluded.
Though his international career was brief, Barusso’s impact — particularly his debut goal — ensured he left his mark on Ghana football history, while his latest comments show a player at peace with his journey in the Black Stars.
