English-born Ghanaian defender Jerome Opoku has expressed his excitement after finally making his full competitive debut for the Black Stars, stating that he always believed his opportunity would come with time.
The 26-year-old has been part of Ghana’s senior national team since 2023 but had struggled for game time due to the presence of established defenders such as Alexander Djiku, Mohammed Salisu, and Daniel Amartey.
Opoku first appeared for Ghana in a friendly against the USA in 2023 and later featured in non-competitive matches against Nigeria and Uganda. However, his long-awaited competitive debut came in the recent international window when he made a late cameo against Chad before earning his first full start in Ghana’s 3-0 victory over Madagascar in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
In an interview with Flashscore, Opoku described his pride in representing Ghana and his belief that patience and hard work would eventually earn him a spot in the team.
“I’ve been working really hard and looking forward to getting a chance in the national team. I knew a day like this would come for me to contribute. It has always been a dream and a privilege to wear the national colors and defend Ghana,” Opoku said.
The Istanbul Başakşehir defender admitted that his starting role against Madagascar came as a slight surprise but emphasized his readiness to deliver.
“I was a little surprised to start against Madagascar, but I had always worked and looked forward to my moment. I hope I did what was expected and didn’t disappoint Ghanaians or the team. I’m super happy to finally make my official and full competitive debut for my country—it’s truly an honor.”
Opoku has been in fine form in the Turkish Süper Lig this season, scoring two goals and providing three assists in 24 appearances for Istanbul Başakşehir. His performances at club level continue to strengthen his case for a regular role in the Black Stars squad.
