Former Ghana international Sam Johnson, affectionately known as “Foyoo,” has expressed his skepticism regarding the Black Stars’ chances of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ghana’s path to the continental tournament appears increasingly precarious after a series of lackluster performances in their qualifying campaign. Currently sitting in third place in Group F, the team’s qualification hopes are hanging by a thread, especially after a disappointing loss to Sudan.
In an interview with Graphic Sports, Johnson remarked that Ghana’s chances of qualifying now hinge on “unrealistic permutations.” He noted the dire situation where the team must rely on Sudan losing their remaining matches. “It’s sad we’re now praying for Sudan to lose their remaining games so we can qualify. God doesn’t work like that because the Sudanese also worship the same God,” the 50-year-old former defender stated.
He further emphasized the bleak outlook: “If we qualify for AFCON, it will be a miracle that has never happened before. Let’s focus on the World Cup and organize ourselves better. If we make it to AFCON, I’ll be surprised but happy.”
The Black Stars will aim to redeem themselves in their upcoming qualifying matches against Angola and Niger in November, as they strive to secure a spot in the prestigious tournament.
