Kennedy Agyapong: Criticising players kill the team and make the Black Stars less attractive

Veteran politician, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, has advised Ghanaians to desist from constantly chastising the Black Stars team as he believes it is the reason the national team doesn’t attract some footballers, especially the foreign-based players.

Many talented Ghanaian players born in Europe recently have rejected invitations to feature for the Black Stars including Jemie Lewiling and  Kelvin Yeboah who currently play for the German U-21 and Italy U-21 national teams respectively.

Additionally, players like Chelsea’s Hudson Odoi, Tariq Lamptey and Mohammed Salisu have all shown no sign of interest to switch allegiance to represent Ghana at the international level.

Many football fans in Ghana on countless occasions have gone very hard on the senior national team following their uninspiring performance so far in the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon.

However, these forms of criticisms are the main reason many believe the foreign footballers with Ghanaian descent have refused to feature for the Black Stars, with a clear case being Inaki Williams and his brother Nico Williams
issue, as confirmed their mother in an early interview in Sunyani.

Speaking on Kumasi-based Akoma FM, the Assin Central Member of Parliament has urged Ghanaians to offer their unwavering support to Black Stars to win their last game against Comoros to qualify and also to stop the unnecessary criticisms.

He said: “I have two Ghanaian players in Spain who wanted to play for Ghana but they rescinded their decision because of what we did to Asamoah Gyan,”

“The GFA approached me to help convince those boys to play for Ghana but they declined because of the fear of being chastised by Ghanaians when they go wrong.”
“We should not chastise our players, we should rather encourage them and we can beat Comoros convincingly to qualify.” He added.

Ghana, four-time African Champions, have failed to win any of their two games which have led them in a dicey situation to make it out of the group.

Ghana now have to beat Comoros massively in their last Group C game before they can stand a chance to progress to the next stage of the tournament.

Ghana will need to beat Comoros in the final group game on Tuesday, January 18 to keep them in the competition.

The four-time African Champions, have always qualified from the group stage of the Afcon since 2008.
