Asante Kotoko legend Abdul Razak has called for the establishment of a reserve league in Ghana. This proposed league would feature curtain-raiser games between reserve teams before the main matches.
Razak believes that this initiative would significantly enhance the development of football fundamentals in the country.
In an interview with Peace FM, Razak provided an example of a match between Hearts of Oak and Dreams FC being preceded by a game between their respective reserve sides. He emphasized the importance of every club having a reserve team, explaining that this would ensure players not regularly featured in the main team maintain their match fitness and sharpness.
“If you don’t get regular playing time, it will be difficult for you when you are eventually called upon. But if you play in the reserves for 90 minutes, you have played some football that could open up a chance for you in the next week,” Razak said.
He also lamented the current situation where some first teams have over 30 players, which he believes hampers player development.
Razak is convinced that a reserve league would provide much-needed opportunities for these players, ultimately benefiting the overall quality of football in Ghana.
