Former Black Stars winger Laryea Kingston believes that Otto Addo’s tactical approach may be hindering the Black Stars from playing more expressive football.
Kingston, who previously coached the Ghana U17 team, argues that the national squad should adopt a more aggressive style of play from the outset, utilizing the talented players available to dominate their opponents.
As the Black Stars prepare to face Sudan in the reverse fixture of their 2025 AFCON qualifiers on Tuesday—following a goalless draw at the Accra Sports Stadium last Thursday—Kingston emphasized the need for a more offensive mindset.
“So, approaching this game, go all out; you have the players. When you look at the Black Stars’ front line, everyone has what it takes to punish any defender,” Kingston told Joy Sports. “Semenyo is excelling in England, and players like Jordan Ayew, Issahaku, and Kudus Muhammad are all performing well at their clubs in Europe. We have the attacking prowess to challenge opponents effectively.”
However, Kingston suggested that the current game plan might be restricting players from expressing themselves in critical attacking moments, particularly when they reach the final third. “We need to allow them to express themselves more, especially considering the chances we missed towards the end of the previous match,” he added.
The draw in the first leg leaves Sudan with four points in Group F, putting them two points ahead of Ghana, who currently sit third. The Black Stars are in a precarious position and face the risk of missing out on AFCON qualification for the first time in two decades.
