During a meeting with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) leadership on Wednesday at the Jubilee House, President Akufo Addo charged the association to work towards ending Ghana’s 41-year Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title drought.
Ghana is set to participate in the 34th edition of the AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast next year, aiming to improve their performance after exiting at the group stage in the last tournament in Cameroon.
President Akufo Addo emphasized the significance of ending the prolonged trophyless streak since Ghana’s last AFCON victory in 1982.
Addressing the GFA, he said, “It’s been forty-one years since Ghana won the Africa Cup of Nations. If my memory serves me right, we have played in a couple of finals in recent times and lost on penalties in 2015. Expectations are very high, so let’s do our best to make this tournament a success.”
The Black Stars, vying for their fifth continental title, have been drawn into Group B and are scheduled to face Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique. Their journey begins with a match against Cape Verde at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan on January 14, 2024, followed by encounters with Egypt and Mozambique.
The 34th AFCON edition is slated to kick off from January 13 to February 11, and President Akufo Addo’s call echoes the aspirations of the nation for a triumphant campaign in the prestigious tournament.
