Former Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Tamimu Issah, has strongly criticized the management committee system in Ghana football, describing it as “archaic” and calling for its abolishment.
Currently, the national teams, including the Black Stars, operate under a management committee. However, Issah believes this system is outdated and hinders the progress of the teams.
“One of the problems I have is the management committee system. Just look around, where do you have this kind of system? It is archaic. We should do away with that management committee system,” he stated in an interview on Asempa FM.
While acknowledging the need for management structures, Issah emphasized that the coach should be the main figure in charge, saying, “I’m not saying there shouldn’t be management, but per the kind of system we have, the coach is the manager of the team. You can have a structure, but the kind of structure we have doesn’t exist.”
In the wake of the Black Stars’ disappointing performance in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, the GFA’s Executive Council has dissolved the team’s management committee. The Black Stars’ failure in the qualifiers saw them finish bottom of Group F, securing just three points from six games, with three defeats and three draws. This marks the first time in 20 years that Ghana will miss the Africa Cup of Nations tournament, which will be held in Morocco.
The GFA is expected to form a new management committee to oversee the Black Stars’ preparations for future games, including the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The team will resume action in March 2025 as they look to bounce back from their recent struggles.
