In a thrilling encounter, Ivorian powerhouse ASEC Mimosas emerged victorious, defeating Ghana’s Asante Kotoko 2-1 to lift the coveted 2024 President’s Cup on Tuesday evening in Kumasi.
The match, held in honor of Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, witnessed a fervent atmosphere at the Accra Sports Stadium, with fans eagerly anticipating the clash between the two formidable teams.
ASEC Mimosas wasted no time asserting their dominance, taking control of the game early on. Their persistence paid off as Kouame Yao broke the deadlock in the 13th minute with a stunning long-range effort that left goalkeeper Frederick Asare helpless.
The visitors extended their lead just before halftime, capitalizing on a penalty awarded after Justice Blay’s goal-line clearance resulted in a handball. Arthur stepped up and confidently converted the spot-kick, giving ASEC a comfortable 2-0 advantage heading into the break.
Asante Kotoko showed resilience in the second half, dominating proceedings and applying pressure in search of a comeback.
Their efforts were rewarded in the 83rd minute when Steven Mukwala was fouled in the box, earning Kotoko a penalty. Mukwala himself stepped up and expertly dispatched the penalty, igniting hopes of a late rally.
Despite Kotoko’s spirited efforts to level the score, ASEC Mimosas held firm defensively, thwarting any further attempts from the hosts.
