Former Legon Cities boss, Maxwell Konadu, has praised the level of football in South Africa, saying their second-tier league is more competitive than the Ghana Premier League.
Konadu, who recently worked with South African side Black Leopards, shared his thoughts after parting ways with the club by mutual agreement. He had joined the team on a two-year deal earlier this year but ended his time there before the contract ran out.
Speaking to Graphic Sports, the experienced coach, who has also managed top Ghanaian sides like Asante Kotoko and All Stars, pointed out how strong and well-organized South Africa’s lower divisions are.
“The second-tier league in South Africa is more competitive than the Ghana league,” he said.
According to Konadu, one of the main reasons for this is how well players are treated and paid in the South African league system. “They pay their players well, and that has attracted top talent. Even during international breaks, matches in those leagues are suspended because many players get national team call-ups,” he explained.
His comments reflect the growing concern about the challenges in Ghana’s domestic football, especially when compared to how other African countries are improving their game.
