Just a day after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Al Ahly in the first leg of their TotalEnergies CAF Champions League semi-final, Esperance’s head coach Nabil Maaloul has announced his resignation from the position.
The decision comes as the club’s hopes of claiming a continental title now hang in the balance following the heavy loss to the record African champions.
In his resignation statement, Maaloul stated that he made the decision in the best interest of the club. He expressed his understanding of the disappointment felt by the Esperance supporters and apologized for not being able to bring them joy.
He acknowledged the challenges faced by his technical staff, the players, and himself, emphasizing that he had exerted every effort to find solutions.
With the first leg deficit to overcome, Esperance now faces an even greater challenge. They would need to secure a win by a margin of more than four goals in the upcoming match in Cairo to qualify for the final.
However, the team must now navigate this hurdle without their head coach, adding a new dimension to their predicament.
Despite his resignation, Maaloul urged the fans to stand by the team for the remainder of the season, as they strive for the best possible ending to the campaign.
