Ghana and Nigeria lock horns at the month for a place at the finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup to be played in Qatar.
The first leg of the play off is originally scheduled to take place in Ghana – at an uncertain venue – on the 25th March whilst the reverse match happens in Abuja four days later.
Ahead of the blockbuster qualifiers, we focus on the pedigree of the Super Eagles at the Coupe du Monde.
Nigeria have been at the FIFA World Cup six times. Only Cameroon have done better. This makes the Nigerians a hard opponent for the Black Stars of Ghana.
Nigeria’s first appearance at the global stage was in USA 1994 World Cup where they topped their group ahead of Bulgaria, Argentina and Greece before they were eliminated by Italy in the Round of 16 after extra time.
The Super Eagles qualified for the next two World Cup tournaments in 1998 and 2002.
After failing to come to Germany 2006, the country of Rashid Yekini and Jay Jay Okocha made it to the next three editions in a row – in 2010, 2014 and 2018.
In fact it must added that no team from the continent have picked more points at the FIFA World Cup than the Super Eagles – 21 points from 21 games played.
Again Nigeria is the African team with most matches won at the World Cup finals – six wins.
This makes Nigeria one of the best African teams so far as the FIFA World Cup is concerned and the play off against Ghana is a real cliffhanger.
