Minister-designate for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has assured the public that all individuals responsible for the violent incidents at Nana Konamansah Park in Nsoatre will face the full force of the law.
His statement follows the tragic death of Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Yaw Frimpong, who was fatally stabbed after the club’s Ghana Premier League Matchday 19 clash against Nsoatreman FC.
Speaking on The Pulse on JoyNews, Kofi Adams strongly condemned the act, stressing that no one is above the law. He reaffirmed that security agencies will conduct a thorough investigation to ensure those involved are prosecuted.
In response to the violence, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has suspended all Premier League matches while the police carry out their investigations.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has arrested three suspects in connection with the incident.
The individuals, identified as former Employment Minister Ignatius Baffour Awuah, Agyemang Duah Owusu, and Kyeremeh Joseph, are currently in police custody and assisting with investigations.
A search of Agyemang Duah Owusu’s residence reportedly led to the discovery of two dresses with suspected bloodstains and an MP-23 pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition, raising further concerns over escalating violence at football venues.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has personally reached out to the family of the deceased and the leadership of Asante Kotoko, extending condolences and assuring them of a thorough probe to bring justice.
Amid growing concerns about hooliganism in Ghanaian football, Kofi Adams reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing security at sports venues nationwide to safeguard fans and players from future violence.
