Liverpool have completed the signing of Dutch international Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, marking the first major addition under new head coach Arne Slot.
The versatile right-sided defender has signed a three-year deal after the Reds triggered his €35 million (£29.5 million) release clause.
Frimpong’s arrival is seen as a proactive move by Liverpool as they prepare for life after Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is set to leave Anfield for Real Madrid at the end of the season.
The 24-year-old began his career in the Manchester City academy before joining Celtic in 2019. He later secured a move to Leverkusen in January 2021, where he developed into a key player under Xabi Alonso.
During his time in Germany, Frimpong made 190 appearances, scoring 30 goals and providing 44 assists. He played a crucial role in Leverkusen’s historic 2023/24 season, helping them win the Bundesliga title unbeaten and clinch the DFB-Pokal.
As part of the transfer, Frimpong’s former club Celtic are set to receive a sell-on fee, reportedly worth around £5 million, according to Sky Sports.
Liverpool are also believed to be targeting Frimpong’s former teammate at Leverkusen, Florian Wirtz, with reports suggesting the Merseyside club have submitted a substantial offer for the highly-rated playmaker.
