Ghanaian winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku has attributed his early struggles in his European career to a lack of trust and belief from coaches.
The 20-year-old, who won the U-20 African Youth Championship with the Black Satellites, has experienced a resurgence in form since joining Leicester City under Enzo Maresca.
Issahaku’s early days in Europe were marked by limited opportunities, making just 12 appearances for Sporting CP’s first team after joining the club in 2022. However, he found his footing under Maresca at Leicester City, contributing 19 goals to help the team secure promotion to the Premier League.
In an interview, Issahaku reflected on his journey, saying that the lack of opportunities early in his career hindered his progress.
“I think sometimes I don’t think it was bad but it was because the opportunity was not there but when I got the opportunity, I got more confident that was why it was more easier to put out what I got,” he explained.
The forward also praised Maresca for giving him confidence on the field and guiding him throughout the season.
“I think it’s just the confidence he gave me on the field, how he guided me during the league and everything,” he added.
With Leicester set to compete in the Premier League next season, Issahaku is aiming to replicate his impressive form from last season.
