Otto Addo, head coach of Ghana’s national football team, has received strong backing from Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member Nana Oduro Sarfo, despite mixed results during his tenure.
Addo has positioned the Black Stars well in their quest for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, currently tied at the top of their qualifying group with Comoros. His success in leading Ghana to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar remains a significant highlight of his coaching career.
However, Addo’s tenure has not been without challenges. While his World Cup achievements are commendable, the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), a major disappointment for the team and its fans.
In response to criticism of Addo, Oduro Sarfo defended the coach’s credentials and contributions.
“Someone was also saying that he is not a top coach. Who is a top coach? A coach who has qualified the national team for the World Cup is not a top coach?” Sarfo argued in an interview with Accra-based Asempa FM.
“Of course, it’s just two matches, but another Mourinho could have lost.”
Despite Oduro Sarfo’s support, questions remain about Addo’s future as the Black Stars coach. The Ghana Football Association has yet to announce its decision regarding his position following the AFCON qualification setback.
As Ghana looks ahead to the next phase of the World Cup qualifiers, the GFA’s decision on Addo’s role will be pivotal in shaping the team’s path forward.
