Black Stars coach Otto Addo has revealed that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has been in contact with German-born Ghanaian defender Derrick Köhn for the past two years regarding a potential nationality switch.
Köhn, currently on loan at Werder Bremen, has been touted as a potential addition to the Black Stars, following in the footsteps of players like Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer, who transitioned from Germany’s youth teams to represent Ghana internationally.
“We spoke to Derrick two years ago; that’s no secret,” Addo confirmed in an interview with Transfermarkt as quoted by Bild. “The players must genuinely want to play. Some may still hold out hope for a call-up to Germany, while others have never even been to Africa.”
He emphasized the complexity of such decisions, stating: “Many factors influence the decision on all sides. Sometimes the players don’t want to commit, and we have to respect that.”
Despite representing Germany at the U19 level, Köhn remains eligible to play for Ghana due to his heritage.
The GFA’s pursuit of the versatile left-back reflects its ongoing efforts to bolster the national team with top talents from the Ghanaian diaspora.
