Former Asante Kotoko and Black Stars striker Malik Jabir has joined many Ghanaians who believe that our football is dead and must be revived as soon as possible.
Speaking to Akoma 87.9 FM in Kumasi, Jabir made it clear that our game is dead because we have been failing to beat teams in Africa in AFCON as Ghana has failed to record a single win in the last 2 AFCONS.
“Ghana has failed to defeat an African team three times in a row, and people expect us to chant praises. That is not correct,” said Malik Jabir.
Malik Jabir disclosed that we can not keep quiet and watch our game deteriorate.
“We need to return to youth football, rebuild the U17, U20, and U23 teams, and ensure a proper transition for them, as Senegal and Mali have done,” continued Jabir.
Ghana was one of the best countries in youth football in the 1990s and the early 2000s but has failed to replicate the performance of the good old days. The youth teams are nowhere to be found on the world stage and Malik Jabir urged the GFA and Sports Ministry to return to youth football.
“This will result in a standardized team for the Black Stars. We shouldn’t be telling ourselves that football isn’t dead when we can’t even win a single game in the Afcon at Cameroon and Ivory Coast,” concluded Jabir.
The former Ghana, Asante Kotoko and ASFA Yennega coach advised the football authorities to learn from the Mali and Senegal systems of Youth football.
