American-born Ghanaian defender Joseph-Claude Gyau has joined Swedish Allsvenskan outfit Degerfors IF, the club have announced.
The 29-year-old joins Degerfors from FC Cincinnati in the USA and has signed a two-year contract to keep him at the club until 2024.
The Bundesliga and MLS-qualified wingback has represented clubs such as Hoffenheim, St. Pauli, Borussia Dortmund, Sonnenhof Großaspach and Duisburg, before returning to the United States and Cincinnati.
He has also done a lot of youth internationals and a handful of A-level internationals for the United States.
Joe Gyau is currently in Cincinnati and will arrive in Sweden on Saturday. He starts training with the team on Monday, after which medical check-ups and paperwork remain.
Hopefully Joe Gyau is ready to play for the match against IF Elfsborg on March 6.
Below is Gyau’s Q& A interview after completing his switch to Sweden:
How does it feel?
– It feels very good! It feels good to be back in Europe and fun to come to a club that has a lot of tradition and history.
What do you know about Degerfors IF?
– Not very much, but I have good friends who know and they only have nice things to say about the club. A good club with a lot of experience and talent among the players. I look forward to meeting them!
Describe yourself as a player.
– I have a good pace and like to take advantage of the fact that I am fast. I’m just in one on one, fit and good with both feet. Masters many different positions on the pitch, so my versatility is a strength as well.
What are your goals for 2022?
– To help the team as much as possible. Good results and that we end up high in the table. I want to be a good teammate and a player that fans can count on always doing their utmost.
Do you want to say something to the fans?
– I long to meet the fans and hope that we will have a good future together. I have already received a lot of positive messages on social media, there are many who have welcomed me and I appreciate that very much.
Sports director Patrik Werner is very pleased with the new acquisition and looks forward to seeing him in the red and white jersey.
– An interesting and well-qualified player who can play on both sides. He has several top qualities, but speed is what stands out. It feels incredibly good that we were able to tie him to us, says sports director Patrik Werner.
