Ghana coach Otto Addo has defended his decision to include Nations FC defender Razak Simpson in the Black Stars squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola and Niger, calling it a positive and well-considered move.
Addo, known for his keen eye for talent, expressed confidence in Simpson’s abilities, noting that his inclusion was well-justified. The defender’s call-up was met with little opposition from fans and analysts, many of whom view Simpson as one of the standout centre-backs in the Ghana Premier League (GPL).
Reflecting on his decision, Addo shared that he personally scouted Simpson and was impressed by his unique qualities.
“It’s not about whether the player is local or foreign; it’s about performance,” Addo explained. “I watched him at Nations FC and he caught my eye. I’ve been traveling around Ghana to watch matches, and he stood out. He performed well in the last game, and I hope he continues to do so.”
Simpson, one of six home-based players in the Black Stars squad, is known for his physical presence and aerial prowess, adding a distinct edge to Ghana’s defense. His imposing size and ability in the air make him a valuable asset, especially as such centre-backs are rare in the Ghanaian top flight.
Ghana will face Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium today (November 18), with the match kicking off at 16:00 GMT.
