The leadership of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) convened a meeting with government officials to discuss the future of Chris Hughton.
The former Premier League manager, who took over from Otto Addo earlier this year on a 21-month contract, has faced mounting pressure due to recent poor results.
Despite a five-game unbeaten streak, Hughton’s tenure saw consecutive losses against Mexico and the USA in international friendlies in October. The Black Stars suffered a 2-0 defeat to the CONCACAF champions, followed by a humiliating 4-0 loss to the US Men’s National Team.
With the 2026 World Cup qualifiers approaching this month, the GFA held discussions with government officials, seeking permission to release Chris Hughton from his role.
Bright Kankam Boadu of Pure FM reported that the GFA is dissatisfied with the team’s performance, leading to their decision to part ways with the 64-year-old coach.
“There have been meetings. There have been a number of meetings at the Jubilee House to find a way for Chris Hughton to step aside for someone else to coach the Black Stars,” he added. “Some people also maintain that Chris Hughton should continue to be at post.”
The Black Stars are scheduled to host Madagascar at the Baba Yara Stadium on November 17 and then travel to face Comoros on November 21 for the first two matches in Group I of the World Cup qualifiers. Subsequently, they will prepare for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), set to be hosted in Ivory Coast next year.
