Sports journalist Awal Mohammed has disclosed that former Black Stars goalkeeper Richard Kingston, popularly known as Olele, played a crucial role in reviving Benjamin Asare’s career and helping him return to top-level football.
Asare, now Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper, endured a serious knee injury in 2023 that forced him to step away from the game. With his football career seemingly in jeopardy, he had to explore alternative means of making a living.
However, Kingston stepped in to support him through the difficult period. He personally oversaw Asare’s rehabilitation and played a key role in securing him a move to Accra Great Olympics.
“Two years ago, he [Benjamin Asare] had a severe leg injury, which led to speculations that he had quit football. It was Olele who contacted him, facilitated his rehabilitation, and later provided him the opportunity to play for Olympics,” Mohammed revealed on Kessben FM.
Asare’s performances at Great Olympics earned him a transfer to Hearts of Oak. Though initially not the club’s first-choice target, he secured a spot in the team after injuries sidelined other goalkeepers.
Today, he has risen to become the captain of Hearts of Oak and Ghana’s number-one goalkeeper, preparing to represent the nation on the biggest stage at the World Cup.
