The Ministry of Youth and Sports has responded to the claims made by former Black Stars coach, Charles Kwablan Akonnor, regarding his salary arrears.
Akonnor had denied receiving $100,000 from the Sports Ministry upon the termination of his contract in September 2021, contrary to the statement made by Mustapha Ussif, the Sports Minister.
According to Ussif, both Akonnor and Milovan Rajevac, another former coach, were paid $100,000 each after the termination of their contracts. However, Ussif acknowledged that there were outstanding payments due to both coaches, and the ministry had a payment schedule in place. Due to financial constraints, the ministry was unable to follow the schedule and would pay the coaches as and when funds became available.
Akonnor refuted the minister’s statement and clarified that the amount he received was not $100,000 as mentioned during the press briefing. He declined to disclose the exact amount but emphasized that it was not the sum stated by the minister. Akonnor also mentioned that his contract details were still with the Football Association (FA), and if necessary, the minister could verify the agreement to ascertain the correct information.
In response to Akonnor’s statements, the Ministry of Youth and Sports promptly issued a rebuttal. In the statement, they outlined the payment details and how they have been settling the former Asante Kotoko coach, providing a comprehensive account of the situation.
