Former Black Stars defender Rashid Sumaila has expressed concern over the recent struggles of the Ghana national team, calling on the leadership of Ghana football to address the underlying problems rather than pointing fingers.
The Black Stars, four-time AFCON champions, suffered a 2-0 defeat to Sudan’s Falcon Jediane at the Benina Martyrs Stadium in Libya, leaving their chances of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in jeopardy. With this loss, Ghana risks missing out on the tournament for the first time since 2004.
In an interview with Bryt FM, Sumaila urged for a solution-focused approach: “We’ve lost whether we like it or not, so I think it will be prudent for us to put it behind us and find solutions to our problems.”
He continued, “We will continue to struggle if we keep apportioning blames instead of finding solutions. The leadership must sit down, assess themselves, fix the problems, and give the team time. I believe things will get better.”
The Black Stars will return to action in November, facing Angola and Niger in their final Group F matches. They must win both games and hope that Sudan falters against these same opponents to have any chance of qualifying for next year’s tournament in Morocco.
