In the first semi-final of the CAF TotalEnergies U-23 Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt emerged victorious by defeating Guinea 1-0 on Tuesday, securing their spot in the final.
This triumph not only keeps alive Egypt’s hopes of retaining the title but also guarantees their participation in the Olympic Games in Paris next year.
The decisive moment came in the first half when talented midfielder Mohamed Shehata Mahmoud unleashed a fantastic strike, finding the back of the net and giving Egypt a 1-0 lead.
Despite Guinea’s domination of the game and their relentless offensive assaults, Egypt’s defense remained solid, conceding only one goal since the arrival of Brazilian coach Micale.
As the second half commenced, Guinea intensified their attacks, but their efforts were met with strong saves from Egyptian goalkeeper Hamza Alaa. Egypt had a brief moment of celebration when Hossam Abdelmaguid’s header breached the goal, but it was disallowed due to an offside position.
With the clock ticking, Guinea continued to push forward, but they were unable to break through Egypt’s defense. The final whistle signaled Egypt’s victory and secured their place in the final as well as their qualification for the Olympic Games in Paris.
On Saturday, the African champions will defend their title at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex.
