Asante Kotoko Chief Executive Officer Nana Yaw Amponsah says it’s ‘unfortunate’ football fans in Ghana are yet to pick lessons from the May 9 stadium disaster that happened in 2001.
Tuesday marked the 22nd anniversary since the unfortunate disaster at the Accra Sports Stadium when Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko faced each other in a Ghana Premier League fixture.
127 people lost their lives following a stampede at the stadium while 100 others were subjected to injuries in what remains the biggest scar in Ghana’s football.
However, 22 years on, Nana Yaw Amponsah says nothing has been learnt so far as hooliganism still lurks around in the top flight.
“Hooliganism still continues unabated in our league. Recently, we saw what happened to Tamale City. It’s been happening at various venues. Each of the 22 years that have passed, we have witnessed hooliganism in our league [and] it means we have not learnt from that incident,” he told Joy Sports.
According to him, something should be used as a reminder for everyone who goes to the stadium.
“I think that should go a long way to help us because we are not acting as if we have learnt from it. That is the unfortunate part.”
