Ghanaian football icon Mohammed Polo has urged fans to adjust their expectations for the Black Stars, highlighting the team’s recent struggles in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Polo’s remarks come in the wake of Ghana’s disappointing 1-1 draw against Niger at the Stade Municipal de Berkane in Morocco, which followed a narrow 1-0 defeat to Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium. The Black Stars’ recent performances have cast doubt on their ability to secure a spot in the continental tournament.
“The Black Stars are facing serious challenges. Football has evolved, and there are no easy teams anymore. We should not assume victory until the final whistle,” Polo said in an interview with Koforidua-based Bryt FM.
He continued, “The perception of being a powerhouse in African football is no longer valid. Based on what I saw against Niger, we need to lower our expectations.”
The four-time African champions will return to action in October, facing Kwesi Appiah’s Sudan in a crucial doubleheader. Sudan has been in impressive form under Appiah, securing five wins from seven matches.
As the Black Stars prepare for these pivotal fixtures, Otto Addo and his team will be aiming to overcome their recent difficulties and secure positive results to boost their qualification hopes.
