Dr. Tony Aubynn, an Executive Council Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has emphasized the need for Ghanaians to temper their expectations for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
He believes that it is unrealistic to expect the Black Stars to win the competition given the current state of the national team.
Dr. Aubynn suggests that Ghana should focus on rebuilding the team, taking inspiration from countries like Senegal and Morocco, who have developed stronger national teams capable of competing at a high level.
He acknowledges the presence of talented players both in Europe and the local league but questions whether there is a cohesive team unit.
He emphasizes the importance of managing expectations and stresses the need to build a strong foundation for the future. Dr. Aubynn suggests that Ghanaian football enthusiasts should lower their expectations and concentrate on constructing a formidable team that can compete effectively in the long run.
“We have talented players in Europe and in our local league but I wonder if we have a team. What we need to do as a country is to lower our expectations as Ghanaians and then build from the base.
“If we still believe we are good enough to beat Brazil or win Afcon at this level of our team, then we will be deceiving ourselves,” Dr. Tony Aubynn said in an interview with Akoma FM.
He continued, “If we win it’s fine but we need to build just as Senegal, Morocco, and the rest have done in recent years now.
“The truth is that, we need to tone down our expectations and rebuild strongly for the future.”
While Ghana is on the verge of qualifying for the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, with only a match against the Central African Republic in September standing in their way, Dr. Aubynn encourages a focus on the broader rebuilding process rather than immediate championship aspirations.
