Ghana’s Black Stars skipper, Andre Ayew, exudes confidence in the squad’s ability to surmount the hurdles that have impeded their progress in recent competitions.
Criticism has been aimed at the national team for their lackluster showings in major tournaments. Despite being four-time champions of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), the team has faltered, bowing out at the group stage in the last three tournaments.
Their disappointment continued at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they failed to meet expectations, exiting the group stage prematurely.
Nevertheless, Ayew, boasting over 100 caps for his nation, remains bullish about the team’s prospects despite these setbacks.
“The players need to understand the significance of wearing this jersey, which means a lot to millions of people. It’s a heavy responsibility, but I know we will bounce back. We’re going through a rough patch, but we’ll overcome it,” the 33-year-old told Canal+.
Ayew is poised to lead the squad as they regather in June for their 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic.
