The Ghana Football Association has provided clarity on the appointment of Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 72-year-old Portuguese tactician has been handed a short-term contract to lead Ghana at the global tournament, replacing Otto Addo, who was relieved of his duties following inconsistent performances despite securing qualification for the tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Several high-profile names, including Pitso Mosimane, Kwesi Appiah, and Paulo Bento, were reportedly considered during the selection process.
Speaking on Asempa FM, the GFA Communications Director, Henry Asante Twum, explained that Queiroz stood out due to the depth of his technical assessment of the Black Stars.
“Carlos Queiroz provided a detailed analysis of his observations of the Black Stars, from their AFCON qualification failure to World Cup qualification,” he stated.
He added that the Portuguese coach demonstrated strong understanding of the squad’s player profiles and presented a clear plan for guiding Ghana beyond the group stage of the World Cup.
Queiroz is expected to meet the Black Stars squad next month during an international friendly against Mexico, before concluding preparations with a final warm-up match against Wales on June 2.
Ghana, set for its fifth World Cup appearance, has been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia.
After back-to-back group stage exits in 2014 and 2022, Queiroz will be tasked with improving Ghana’s performance and making a stronger impact at the global tournament.
