Qatar and Switzerland will kick off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaigns when they face each other in a Group B encounter at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on Saturday.
The match represents the first competitive meeting between the two nations, with both sides aiming to secure an early advantage in a group that also features Canada and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Match Preview
Qatar return to the World Cup for only the second time in their history after making their debut as hosts in 2022. The Maroons endured a disappointing tournament on home soil, exiting at the group stage without recording a point.
Julen Lopetegui’s side booked their place at the 2026 tournament with a hard-fought victory over the United Arab Emirates in qualification, but their recent form has raised concerns. Qatar head into the competition without a win in their last six matches, including a defeat to the Republic of Ireland and a draw against El Salvador in their final warm-up games.
Despite their struggles, Qatar will believe Group B presents a realistic opportunity to challenge for a place in the knockout rounds. A positive result against Switzerland could significantly boost their hopes of reaching the last 32 for the first time.
Interestingly, Qatar’s only previous meeting with Switzerland ended in a 1-0 victory in an international friendly in 2018.
Switzerland, meanwhile, arrive at the tournament with far greater World Cup experience. This will be their 13th appearance at football’s biggest event, and they have reached the knockout stage in each of the last three editions.
The Swiss have developed a reputation for consistency on the international stage and will be aiming to progress beyond the Round of 16 after suffering elimination at that stage in 2014, 2018 and 2022.
Murat Yakin’s side have also shown encouraging form heading into the tournament. Switzerland have lost only one of their last 14 matches in all competitions and recently secured an impressive win over Jordan before drawing with Australia in their final friendly.
With matches against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Canada still to come, Switzerland will be eager to start their campaign with three points.
Team News
Qatar are expected to rely heavily on star forward Akram Afif, who remains the team’s primary attacking threat. Afif is likely to be joined in attack by Yusuf Abdurisag and Edmilson Junior.
At the back, experienced defenders Pedro Miguel and Boualem Khoukhi are expected to marshal the defence, while goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada is tipped to start between the posts.
Switzerland possess a blend of experience and quality throughout their squad. Captain Granit Xhaka is set to anchor the midfield alongside Remo Freuler, while Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji will lead the backline.
In attack, Zeki Amdouni is expected to get the nod ahead of Breel Embolo, although both players remain important options for Yakin.
Predicted Lineups
Qatar:
Abunada; Al-Oui, Khoukhi, Pedro Miguel, Ahmed; Laye, Fathi, Gaber; Abdurisag, Afif, Edmilson.
Switzerland:
Kobel; Widmer, Akanji, Elvedi, Rodriguez; Xhaka, Freuler; Vargas, Rieder, Ndoye; Amdouni.
Prediction
Qatar are capable of causing problems, particularly through the creativity and goalscoring ability of Akram Afif. However, Switzerland’s experience, tactical discipline and superior quality across the pitch could prove decisive.
The Swiss have consistently performed well at major tournaments and appear better equipped to handle the pressure of an opening World Cup fixture.
Prediction: Qatar 1-2 Switzerland
