Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has made it clear that qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil is the team’s main objective, even ahead of the upcoming 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Ghana will feature in their second consecutive WAFCON, having secured bronze at the 2025 edition, and have been drawn into Group D alongside Mali, Cape Verde, and Cameroon. With the tournament just less than two months away, the Swedish coach has called for intensive preparations to ensure the team can compete at the highest level.
“From now on, we can start planning and make the best possible preparation to achieve a good result,” Lars Björkegren said.
He added: “For me, and I think for all of us, it’s a clear target to make the top four, to secure a spot at the World Cup. That is the most important goal. Once we achieve that, we can push further for the gold medal.”
Under the tournament format, the top two teams from each group advance automatically to the quarterfinals, with the four semifinalists earning a place at the 2027 Women’s World Cup. Lars Björkegren’s focus on both preparation and performance signals Ghana’s ambition to not only progress in Morocco but also make a strong mark on the global stage next year.
