Zambia’s Racheal Kundananji has made history by becoming the most expensive women’s footballer ever, securing a groundbreaking transfer to Bay FC from Madrid CFF for a staggering $860,000.
The prolific forward, renowned for her impressive tally of 33 goals in 43 Liga F games for Madrid, has inked a four-year deal with the American club, with an option for an additional year.
Bay FC is poised to make its debut in the National Women’s Soccer League this year, and Kundananji’s acquisition marks a significant milestone for both the club and women’s football globally.
At 23 years old, Kundananji’s move sets a new benchmark in the women’s game, eclipsing the previous record held by England midfielder Keira Walsh’s £400,000 transfer from Manchester City to Barcelona in 2022.
Bay FC’s groundbreaking deal for Kundananji involves an initial payment of $785,000, supplemented by $75,000 in add-ons, further underscoring the magnitude of the transfer.
Kundananji’s illustrious career trajectory began at Zambian outfit Indeni Roses before stints with BIIK Kazygurt in Kazakhstan, Eibar in Spain, and ultimately, Madrid CFF.
Her stellar performances have not gone unnoticed, with 25 goals in 29 league games propelling Madrid CFF to a historic fifth-placed finish last season.
Moreover, Kundananji’s versatility and goal-scoring prowess were on full display at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, where she showcased her talent on the global stage.
With 10 goals in 18 appearances for Zambia, Kundananji’s impact transcends club football, cementing her status as one of Africa’s brightest talents.
Her record-breaking transfer further exemplifies the growing investment in women’s football, as evidenced by a significant surge in transfer fees reported by FIFA, totaling $2.1 million in January alone.
Kundananji’s arrival at Bay FC adds to the club’s formidable roster, joining the likes of Nigeria striker Asisat Oshoala and former Arsenal defender Jen Beattie, signaling the club’s ambitions for success in the NWSL and beyond.
