Zambia and Orlando Pride forward Barbra Banda has been named the 2024 BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year after securing the majority of votes from fans across the globe.
The 24-year-old emerged victorious from a shortlist of five players, selected by a panel of global football experts—including coaches, players, and journalists—based on performances from September 2023 to August 2024.
An emotional Banda expressed her gratitude to those who supported her:
“I am shocked and surprised to have this award right by my side. I would like to thank the people who voted and everyone who has played a part in my life and career—my family, my national team in Zambia, and especially the Pride team. This award is for everyone.”
Banda delivered outstanding performances in 2024, including an impressive showing at the Paris Olympics, where she scored four goals for Zambia. This included a first-half hat-trick against Australia, cementing her place as the leading African goal scorer in Olympic history with 10 goals.
Her remarkable form extended to the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), where she joined Orlando Pride in March. Banda scored 13 goals during the regular season and added four more in the playoffs, including the decisive goal in the championship final, as Orlando Pride secured their first-ever title. Her efforts earned her the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
Spain and Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmatí finished second in the BBC voting, while USA and Portland Thorns forward Sophia Smith claimed third place.
Banda’s achievements reflect her rapid rise as one of the most influential players in women’s football.
