Sudan beat Ghana 1-0 on Tuesday to blow up the qualifying group C wide open.
Striker Mohamed Abdul Rahman headed home the only goal of the game in stoppage time when the Ghanaian thought they were few seconds away from confirming their qualification for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted in Cameroon.
The Black Stars needed to avoid a defeat to qualify for the competition finals.
Ghana are still on top of the group with 9 points followed by South Africa also on 9 points but the Black Stars have better head to head as things stand now.
Sudan are third with 6 points now and the pioneer African nation knows that they have a realistic chance of qualifying to the tournament finals. Their two remaining games are at home against South Africa and away against Sao Tome et Principe.
Ghana will travel to South Africa in March next year before concluding their qualification tournament with a home game against So Tome et Principe who have no chance of making it to Cameroon.
