Nigeria midfielder Frank Onyeka is relishing the upcoming Unity Cup showdown against arch-rivals Ghana, set for May 28, 2025, at the Gtech Community Stadium in West London.
The Brentford midfielder, currently on loan at Bundesliga side Augsburg, is expected to make the Super Eagles squad for the much-anticipated friendly, which will rekindle the storied rivalry between the two West African powerhouses.
“I am looking forward to that game,” Onyeka told *Joy Sports*. “It is always a big rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana, and it’s good to have this Cup game to bring the country together. Hopefully, we will win against Ghana.”
While Ghana are enjoying a strong run in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, sitting atop Group I, Nigeria have struggled and face an uphill battle to secure qualification for the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
“We still have a chance to qualify. We have to win the rest of our four matches, and hopefully, we will qualify,” Onyeka said, remaining optimistic about Nigeria’s chances.
The midfielder also expressed his disappointment at Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), despite their promising World Cup campaign.
“I was sad for them. I know they didn’t play well in the AFCON qualifiers, but they’re almost through to the World Cup. It’s always good to have Ghana in international competitions — I have friends in the Ghanaian team,” Onyeka added.
The Unity Cup match will offer both nations a chance to test their squads ahead of crucial international fixtures later this year.
