England defender Djed Spence has become the subject of widespread discussion after appearing to decline a customary pre-match handshake with Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey ahead of the Group L encounter between Ghana and England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The incident occurred during the traditional player introductions before kickoff at Boston Stadium on June 23. While most members of the England squad exchanged handshakes with Partey, footage circulating on social media appeared to show Spence bypassing the Ghana midfielder during the pre-match formalities.
The moment comes amid ongoing public attention surrounding Partey, who is currently facing criminal charges in the United Kingdom. The former Arsenal midfielder has denied all allegations and remains available for selection while legal proceedings continue.
In the lead-up to the match, reports suggested England’s Football Association had considered whether guidance should be issued to players regarding interactions with Partey. However, no official instructions were reportedly given to the squad before the game.
Partey returned to Ghana’s starting lineup against England after missing the Black Stars’ opening World Cup fixture against Panama due to visa-related complications that prevented him from entering Canada.
The midfielder’s participation in the tournament has continued to attract attention, and he was met with boos from sections of the England supporters whenever he was in possession during the match.
Despite the off-field discussions, Ghana produced a disciplined performance to hold England to a goalless draw, earning an important point in their quest to reach the knockout stage of the competition.
