Benjamin Asare etched his name into Ghana’s football history after making his first-ever FIFA World Cup start for the Black Stars and keeping a clean sheet in a goalless draw against England on Tuesday.
The Hearts of Oak goalkeeper was handed the starting role following concerns over the fitness of first-choice keeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi and delivered a composed performance as Ghana frustrated the Three Lions in their Group L clash.
Asare produced important saves and commanded his defence superbly to help Ghana secure a valuable 0-0 draw, leaving the Black Stars in a strong position to qualify for the Round of 32.
The 33-year-old has now become the first Ghanaian goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet on his first World Cup start, adding another remarkable chapter to his fairytale rise from the Ghana Premier League to football’s biggest stage.
Ghana now have four points from two matches after their opening 1-0 victory over Panama and will face Croatia in their final Group L game.
