2023 AFCON: John Paintsil attributes Black Stars’ poor performance to ”leadership and hard luck”

Former Black Stars defender John Paintsil has offered insights into Ghana’s early exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Paintsil cited a lack of leadership and unfortunate circumstances as major contributors.

The four-time African champions faced elimination at the group stage after securing only two points in three matches. They lost 2-1 to Cape Verde and drew 2-2 with both Egypt and Mozambique despite holding leads. This marked Ghana’s third consecutive group stage exit in major tournaments, following similar outcomes in AFCON 2021 and the 2022 World Cup.

According to John Paintsil, the team’s misfortune was compounded by a lack of leadership qualities from the coaching staff. Speaking on UTV, he stated, “The players were unlucky, but we lacked leadership quality from the coaches. The boys were not united.”

Highlighting the importance of team cohesion, Paintsil emphasised that success cannot be achieved solely through individual brilliance. He pointed out discrepancies in player movements and a dependence on individual skills rather than collective teamwork.

Comparing the current situation to his playing days, John Paintsil noted a stark decline in standards, citing a lack of respect, unity, and responsibility among the players.

He said, “We could even close our eyes during our time and beat you before leaving the dressing room. We will predict to score 2-0 under 20 minutes because the respect and unity were there. There was no discrimination so sometimes players must take responsibility. You are not a team player if you see yourself as bigger than your teammates.”

In response to the disappointing AFCON 2023 campaign, the Ghana Football Association dismissed coach Chris Hughton. They followed by forming a committee to find his replacement, with numerous applications being submitted.

Looking ahead, Ghana’s focus will shift to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June, where they are set to face Mali and the Central African Republic.
