Ghana head coach Otto Addo has addressed the recent scuffle between forward Jordan Ayew and goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi that occurred after the Black Stars’ disappointing defeat to Sudan.

The incident reportedly took place in the locker room immediately after the match, as frustrations mounted over Ghana’s disappointing performance in the crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

According to sources, Ayew, visibly upset after the match, exchanged words with Ati Zigi over the team’s performance, which quickly escalated into a heated confrontation. The situation was diffused by fellow players before it could turn physical, highlighting the growing pressure within the squad as they face the possibility of failing to qualify.

The incident, which raised eyebrows among fans and analysts alike, has been viewed by Addo as a necessary step towards team growth and cohesion.

In a media briefing, Addo explained that confrontations like the one between Ayew and Ati Zigi can serve a constructive purpose within a team.

“Sometimes, to be honest, teams need this to grow. Sometimes I like it better than talking behind somebody’s back, you know, to be direct and straight,” he stated. The coach emphasized the importance of open communication among players, especially following a match where emotions are running high due to poor performance.

He further elaborated that addressing grievances directly is crucial for improvement. “If somebody didn’t do this or that or if someone feels that things could be better, then they have to say it because this is what makes us better,” Addo remarked.

While the scuffle could have been perceived as a sign of discord, Addo views it as a catalyst for progress. By encouraging players to voice their concerns and frustrations, he aims to foster an environment where players can hold each other accountable and work collectively towards improvement.

Ghana now faces a daunting task, needing to win their remaining qualifiers against Angola and Niger in November while hoping for favorable results elsewhere.
