‘I have no plans to return to football after number 12 exposé’ – Kwesi Nyantakyi

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi has ruled out a return to football, despite acknowledging that he occasionally misses the sport.

Speaking in an interview on Lawson TV/Radio Ghana Se Sen Morning Show, Nyantakyi reflected on the events following the 2018 investigative exposé by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas. The exposé, which accused him of corruption, led to his removal from key roles in global football governance.

Nyantakyi, however, revealed he has moved on from the ordeal without harboring resentment. “I don’t have bitterness in me. Whatever happened has happened. If you keep thinking about it, it can destroy you,” he said.

Although football remains a fond memory, Nyantakyi emphasized that his current focus is on supporting Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential campaign. He hinted that if Bawumia were to win the December 7 election and offer him the position of Sports Minister, he would carefully evaluate the opportunity before making a decision.

Reflecting on the corruption allegations, Nyantakyi maintained his innocence, stating that both FIFA and the courts had cleared him of any wrongdoing. “The documentary gained widespread support, but I believe it lacked merit,” he remarked.

The 2018 exposé featured footage of Nyantakyi allegedly accepting $65,000 from an undercover journalist posing as a sponsor for the Ghana FA. The release of the footage by BBC Africa’s Africa Eye caused a global stir, resulting in Nyantakyi’s dismissal from his roles as a FIFA Council Member and CAF 1st Vice President.

Despite the controversy, Nyantakyi remains focused on rebuilding his life and contributing to other national endeavors outside football.
