Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, believes the Ghana national football team have the potential to achieve a historic run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The four-time African champions head into the tournament as one of the lower-ranked teams and have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama national football team, England national football team, and Croatia national football team.
Despite recent struggles, including a winless run in their last matches, Adams remains confident Ghana can rise to the occasion.
“I will say that we are preparing. If I tell you that we are ready… we don’t even have a head coach,” he told Channel One TV.
“So it means that we are not fully ready yet. But I see us being ready by the time it’s time for us to play our first game against Panama. This is a World Cup that I see us doing well. We should be hopeful. We may not have the best of players that we had in some time past, but we still have what it takes to go very, very far—maybe possibly even win the World Cup,” he added.
Following the departure of Otto Addo, the Ghana Football Association is expected to appoint a new head coach next week as preparations continue.
Ghana will regroup in May for a friendly against Mexico national football team before wrapping up their build-up games against Wales national football team on June 2.
The Black Stars will open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17, followed by matches against England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27, as they aim to improve on group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022.
