Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has stressed that the Black Stars’ opening fixture against Panama will be the defining match of their 2026 FIFA World Cup group campaign.
Ghana, four-time African champions, have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. While the group presents tough opposition on paper, Gyan believes everything could hinge on how Ghana perform in their first match.
Speaking on World Cup Central on Channel One TV, he underlined the importance of starting strongly:
“This is the most important game we have in the group,” he said.
He further explained that despite the presence of heavyweight opponents like England, the opening clash carries the most weight:
“Although we have the likes of England and others in the group, our first game against Panama is the most critical game.”
Gyan warned against underestimating Panama, noting that the Central American side could pose serious challenges despite Ghana’s perceived superiority.
“Statistically, we are ahead of them, and we don’t know what they are going to bring to the table,” Gyan noted.
He added that recent observations of Panama’s performances convinced him they must be taken seriously:
“But the last time I saw them play, I told myself that we have to watch out for them.”
Describing Group L as highly competitive and unpredictable, the former Sunderland striker said Ghana’s path to qualification could be shaped early depending on their first result:
“Our group is a very tricky group, but when we are able to overcome Panama, anything can happen in the other games,” he said.
Gyan also urged the Black Stars to approach each match with focus and determination, emphasizing the importance of collecting maximum points against Panama:
“Everybody will be expecting us to beat Panama, but any team that qualifies for the World Cup means that the team did something right,” he stated.
“But against Panama, we have to make sure that we get the three points. We shouldn’t settle for anything less. We should go for that win.”
Ghana will begin their World Cup journey against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27. Ahead of the tournament, the Black Stars will also test their form in international friendlies against Mexico and Wales as part of their final preparations.
