Aston Villa have identified Japan international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki as a potential replacement for Emiliano Martinez amid growing uncertainty over the Argentine’s future at the club.
Martinez, who played a key role in Argentina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph, has been linked with a move away from Villa Park, with Italian giants Juventus reportedly interested in signing the experienced shot-stopper.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Villa manager Unai Emery and the club’s recruitment team have drawn up a shortlist of goalkeepers, with Suzuki among the leading candidates.
The 23-year-old, who is of Ghanaian descent, has impressed for Parma in Serie A and is regarded as one of Japan’s brightest goalkeeping talents. Villa are understood to have monitored his progress for several months.
Suzuki’s growing reputation in European football and on the international stage has made him an attractive option as Villa prepare for the possibility of life without Martinez.
The goalkeeper is also preparing for his maiden FIFA World Cup with Japan, with interest from Aston Villa marking another significant milestone in his rapidly developing career.
