Ex-Ghana star Jonathan Mensah has expressed confidence in the Black Stars’ ability to compete against Colombia as they prepare for their Round of 32 encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana secured qualification to the knockout stage after finishing third in Group L. The Black Stars began their campaign with a victory over Panama, earned a draw against England, and concluded the group stage with a defeat to Croatia.
Reflecting on the team’s journey so far, Mensah praised the importance of their opening victory.
“I was glad for the boys getting three points in the first game; very important, and that obviously helped us to qualify. I’m glad we did that. Now we recover, prepare and go again,” he said.
The former Columbus Crew defender also shared his thoughts on Ghana’s loss to Croatia, suggesting the team’s qualification before the match affected their approach.
“It was a bizarre game against Croatia from my perspective. When you know you are already through to the knockout stage, the sense of urgency wasn’t there, a couple of changes were made, but I’m glad the team came out of the game healthy,” he added.
With Ghana now set to face Colombia, Mensah believes the Black Stars should approach the match with confidence while focusing on proper preparation.
“We don’t fear anyone; we just need to prepare according to our strengths and do proper scouting of opponents,” he told TV3 in an interview.
The Black Stars will be aiming to extend their impressive World Cup campaign when they take on Colombia for a place in the Round of 16.
