Ghana-eligible defender Ewan Otoo has completed a move to English League One club Rotherham United after signing a two-year contract, subject to EFL and FA approval as well as international clearance.
The 23-year-old, who was born in Glasgow, Scotland, but qualifies to represent Ghana through his heritage, earned his contract after impressing Rotherham’s technical team during a successful pre-season trial.
The Millers have also secured an option to extend Otoo’s stay for an additional year.
Manager Matt Hamshaw decided to reward the versatile defender for his strong performances during the trial period, with Otoo joining the club ahead of their pre-season preparations.
Otoo began his football career in the prestigious Celtic academy, joining the Scottish giants at the age of eight before signing his first professional contract nine years later.
During his time with Celtic, he represented Scotland at the Under-17 level and captained the club’s B team in the Lowland League.
Seeking regular first-team opportunities, Otoo gained valuable experience through loan spells at Clyde and Dunfermline Athletic, where he earned recognition for his consistency and defensive maturity.
His spell at Dunfermline was particularly memorable as he played a key role in helping the club win the Scottish League One title and gain promotion to the Championship during the 2022/23 season.
Following that successful campaign, Dunfermline secured his services permanently, and Otoo went on to become an important member of the squad.
Over the past three seasons, the defender has made 78 league appearances and featured in 23 additional domestic cup matches.
Otoo’s versatility remains one of his biggest strengths, as he can operate across the entire back line while also contributing in central midfield and on the left side of midfield when required.
Despite representing Scotland at youth level, the defender remains eligible to switch allegiance to Ghana, potentially making him a future option for the Black Stars if he chooses to pursue an international career with the West African nation.
