Ghanaian centre-back Rufai Mohammed has completed a move to Italian Serie A club Venezia FC on loan from Swedish side IF Elfsborg until the end of the season.
The deal reportedly includes an option to buy, giving Venezia the opportunity to make the 20-year-old defender’s move permanent if he meets agreed performance targets.
Mohammed makes the move to Italy after recently extending his contract with Elfsborg until December 2029, underlining the Swedish club’s belief in his long-term potential.
“When Venezia called, I accepted immediately because they’re a great club, with a great history and fantastic fans. This is the right environment for a young player like me to grow and improve. I’ll try to give my all to help the team achieve all its goals. I watched the match against AC Milan on TV and was really impressed by the passion and enthusiasm of the fans who so many traveled to support the team. This enthusiasm is essential for a player.” said the Ghanaian international.
The transfer represents a major step forward in the career of the former Ghana U17 international, who joined Elfsborg from Ghanaian club Inter Allies in 2024.
Standing at 1.98 metres, Mohammed has built a reputation as a dominant aerial defender with strong physical qualities and the ability to contribute in possession. His performances in Sweden’s Allsvenskan, including a development spell with IFK Värnamo, helped attract interest from abroad.
Venezia identified the Ghanaian defender as a player capable of adding strength and stability to their backline as they compete in Italy’s top flight.
The move gives Mohammed the chance to test himself against some of Europe’s best attackers while continuing his rapid development on one of football’s biggest stages.
