Former Black Stars assistant coach, Maxwell Konadu, emphasizes the importance of Chris Hughton asserting authority over the team as Ghana prepares for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.
Ghana, aiming for their fifth continental title, is gearing up for the 34th edition of AFCON, set to commence in nine days. Konadu, currently the head coach of Nsoatreman FC, underscores the significance of discipline for the team’s success in Ivory Coast.
“I think Chris Hughton has to stamp his authority on the team whether he likes it or not,” Konadu asserts, addressing the need for a disciplined approach.
He further expresses the sentiment that Ghanaians desire to see a team that operates with military-like discipline, following instructions with precision. This, according to Konadu, instills confidence in the team, emphasizing that players should be committed to achieving the common goal of winning the AFCON trophy.
“Ghanaians are becoming fed up with players doing what they want in camp. We want to see a team like it’s from the army barracks that will listen to instructions; do this or don’t do that.
“When we see these things happening, then we have confidence in the group that nobody is scared of any big name. Everyone came there to win the cup.”
Chris Hughton’s Black Stars are currently in Kumasi for their preparations, and Ghana is scheduled to begin their group stage campaign against Cape Verde on Sunday, January 14, 2024. Subsequent matches will be against record champions Egypt and Mozambique on January 18 and January 22, 2024, respectively.
