Henry Asante Twum, the Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), expresses optimism despite the Black Stars’ technical team lacking experience in tournaments, particularly the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
As Ghana approaches the 34th edition of AFCON with hopes of securing their fifth trophy, Asante Twum acknowledges the recent less-than-ideal performance of the team. However, he remains hopeful about the Black Stars making a significant impact in the tournament.
In an interview, Asante Twum highlights Ghana’s rich history in AFCON, dating back to the early 1960s and late 1980s. He emphasizes the importance of the team’s ability to seize the opportunity to shine on the continental stage.
While recognizing the challenges, including the presence of record holders Egypt in the group stage, Asante Twum believes that the right focus, mentality, and tactics can make a difference for the Black Stars.
He notes several factors playing in Ghana’s favor, including the proximity of the tournament host, which allows Ghanaian fans to easily support the team. Despite the technical team’s lack of AFCON leadership experience, Asante Twum remains confident in the capabilities of Chris Hughton, George Boateng, and Didi Dramani.
”There are a number of factors we can take from this tournament, both for us and against us. The factors that play in our favour is having a neighbouring country hosting the tournament, which will allow Ghanaians to easily go and support the Black Stars,” said Henry Asante Twum.
“We have a technical team that has no AFCON experience in terms of leadership but nothing is impossible with the experience of Chris, George and Didi, I strongly believe that, if we are able to start well against Cape Verde, which is the hope of every single Ghanaian, we will be able to go all the way,” he added.
As the Black Stars open camp in Kumasi, preparing for their upcoming matches, including a friendly against Namibia on January 8 at the Baba Yara Stadium, Asante Twum emphasizes the importance of a strong start against Cape Verde in the group stage.
Ghana is placed in Group B alongside Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique for the AFCON tournament.
