AFCON 2025: Cameroon’s crazy 24 hours analysed

Samuel Eto’o was destined to continue his role as the president of FECAFOOT after no one decided to contest him. The former Barcelona striker enjoyed a wonderful election after he won 97.7% of the votes with two votes declared void.

The victory shows how the hierarchy of Cameroonian football trusts Samuel Eto’o’s leadership.

After a perennial battle between Eto’o and the former Belgian head coach Marc Brys, it was clear that the 63-year-old was not going to last long after the final play-off of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where D.R. Congo defeated them via Mbemba’s late strike.

FECAFOOT has revealed that Brys never respected the association by refusing to attend important meetings, avoiding important press meetings, and violating the federation’s marketing and sponsorship procedures.

The FECAFOOT decided on Monday to fire Marc Brys and immediately appointed Pago as the man to lead the Indomitable Lions at the AFCON.

David Pagou, the man with no Wikipedia page, has been given a huge job as he has just 20 days to prepare the team for the biggest showpiece of the year 2025. The 56-year-old was coaching Cotton Sport Garoua before he got his dream job.

Clubs like Aigle Royal in Gabon and PWD Bamenda of Cameroon are some of the teams Pagou has coached.

With less than three weeks before the big kick-off in Morocco, the decision to sack Brys was shocking, even though it was expected.

The same day a new coach was announced, the final 25-man squad was announced, too. Wasn’t Monday a crazy day in Cameroonian football?

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana, who is on loan at Trabzonspor in Turkey and veteran striker Vincent Aboubakar were left out of the team for Morocco 2025. The decision is unbelievable considering their experience.

Questions are being asked about the one who named the squad. Is it the FECAFOOT? Did Marc Brys select them, or did the new coach, David Pagou, select them?

The five-time winners of the AFCON will not be counted among the favourites after a crazy 24 hours that led to the sacking of Marc Brys, the appointment of David Pagou and the omission of key leaders, Andre Onana and Vincent Aboubakar, from the squad.

Cameroon, in Group F, will face Gabon, the Ivory Coast and Mozambique in the AFCON 2025.
